Frat Boys Are Killing Each Other With Hazing
Florida Frat Chapter Suspended For All-Kinds-Of-Illegal Facebook Page
The deranged Maryland sorority girl isn't the only Greek life member who's slipped up by being indiscreet on the Interwebz. According to the Miami Herald, Florida International University has suspended its chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha (or Pike) after authorities received 70 screenshots of a "private" Facebook page where members of the frat spread topless shots of women without their permission (one of whom was underage, according to CNN), homophobic epithets, alluded to hazing, straight-up served as a Craigslist for drug dealing, and more.
From Fox News:
"Anyone have a connect for coke. Not me, a friend wants, lol," one group member reportedly wrote on the "private" page, while another post seemingly concerns a supply of the prescription drug, Adderall: "30mg of addy 10 starting tomorrow. 15 for non brothers."Yeah, "LOL," bro.
More than one post also addressed the rule that Pike T-shirts were only to be sold to thin women. ROFL?
One post from a frat brother alludes to the Boston Marathon bombings as a publicity magnet: "Guys please put up the PIKE Prays for Boston Banner that's upstairs outside so that when people start arriving tomorrow morning they see it. This is excellent publicity!" Another user asks when hazing ends, and receives the response "When the pledges die."
It's hardly the first strike for this Pike chapter, which has been found guilty of various minor charges since 2006: Underage drinking, vandalism, and one instance of a student being rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a night of "butt-chugging," which is exactly what it sounds like.
Neither Pike's national headquarters — who has ensured that the chapter has lost their charter — or FIU itself knew that the Facebook page was operating, and both are now working in conjunction to dole out consequences besides the temporary shutdown. National PIKE insists that this chapter is the exception, not the rule. And in an FIU statement, administrators clarify that "The university is taking this information very seriously." However, the school's president admits that punishment will be limited to "a few individuals who need to understand what matters and that have damaged the reputations of others."
Also remember that Facebook has those supposedly-"stringent" content rules to prevent things like topless shots — not to mention those of minors.
