Get the Hair You Want
"This style is '60s inspired, but the vibe is more sophisticated than sex kitten," says Ken Paves, cocreator of Hairdo extensions and stylist behind Jennifer's Golden Globes hair.
Step one:"Blow-dry wet hair with a medium round brush," instructs Paves. If your hair doesn't easily hold a curl, apply gel or curling cream before drying. "Then, while your hair is still hot, take two-inch-wide sections and wrap each one around two fingers, creating smooth barrel curls." Anchor each new curl against the scalp with a bobby pin, and let it set for a few minutes. "Your hair should be cool before removing the pins," he notes.
Step two:"Brush hair through using your fingers," notes Paves. "To make the texture last, spray with a medium-hold hair spray." We like VO5 Quick Hold Fast Drying Hair Spray (.49). "If your hair is short or fine, attach a Hairdo 18-Inch Clip-in Wavy Extension to get the volume and texture for this look," he suggests.
Step three:"Take the side sections of hair (leaving the crown out), and pull them up, fastening tightly with an elastic on top of the head," he says. "Tease the remaining hair at the crown, and pull it back so that it covers the elastic. Secure in place with pins."
Step four:Finally, seal in shine and prevent flyaways with an antifrizz spray. To keep your style smooth all night, Paves recommends Kérastase Paris Vernis Nutri-Sculpt ().
Ellen Barkin's Sleek, Sideswept Bob
"This is a short style that still has a lot of movement, which makes it sexy," says Serge Normant, global creative director of John Frieda and Ellen Barkin's mane man.
Step one:"Shampoo and condition with products that rinse clean," says Normant. "If you have really thin hair, condition just the ends." Try Pantene Pro-V Ice Shine Shampoo (.99). "Next, apply a volumizer to the roots and a silicone product to the ends," says Normant. Try John Frieda Sheer Blonde Volumizing Spray (.99) and John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum (.99).
Step two:Give hair an uneven side part, and use a medium round brush to blow-dry. "The key is to make sure the ends are dead straight, not curled under," Normant explains. "One way to achieve this is to blow-dry toward the front. Finally, style the shortest layer of hair so that it's swept across the forehead, which will give it a sexy edge."
Step three:"If you need more sharpness, flat-iron just the ends," he says. Finish with a high-shine hair spray.
Jennifer Hudson's Cascading Curls
"This is a beautiful, classic look on any woman," says Kiyah Wright, who gave Jennifer Hudson her feminine, goddesslike style. "It lasts longer on textured, voluminous hair," notes Wright, but those with straight tresses can get it with the right tools and products.
Step one:"After shampooing and conditioning, apply a volume-boosting product to the roots, which will give your hair some lift," says Wright. We like Nexxus Volumizing Root Lifter (). If your hair doesn't curl easily, work through some Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Scrunching Gel (.99) before drying on low heat with a diffuser. If you have some natural curl, blow-dry normally without additional products, then use a light hair spray throughout to hold the style.
Step two:"Next, use a half-inch curling iron to curl sections of hair, moving from the front to the back. Be sure the hair is wrapped in a spiral form down the iron, which will create the ringlet curls," instructs Wright.
Step three:"Finally, use a fine-tooth comb to tease the roots, and spray on a medium-hold hair spray. I used Warren-Tricomi Style Line Hairspray because it works even in humid climates," says Wright. "Last, pull the spirals apart with your fingers for a natural look."
Scarlett Johansson's Intricate Updo
"This looks complicated, but it's not," says stylist Giannandrea. "It's amazing on highlighted hair, but anyone with shoulder-length hair can wear it. Give yourself some time, as it can take a few tries."
Step one:"Start with wet hair, and then blow it dry about halfway so that it's still damp," says Giannandrea. "Next, apply a volumizing mousse throughout, and continue to dry without a brush." Try Tresemmé Thermal Creations Volumizing Mousse (.99). "Once hair is dry, apply a bit of molding paste to the bottom three quarters of the hair to give it texture and shine." Try L'Oréal Paris Studio Line Unkempt Out of Bed Weightless Texturizer (.99).
Step two:"Give hair a soft, undefined side part. In this case, it went from left to right," he notes.
Step three:There will be one braided section on the top, two on the side, and a few in the back. Start by braiding the top section, using a flexible hair spray like L'Oréal Professionnel Infinium () to hold hair in place. "French braid each section, keeping the braid as close to the head as possible. Once all of the sections are done, twist them together in the back and secure with pins," he says. "Finally, use your fingers to open the braids up so they look a bit undone."
Sarah Jessica Parker's Tousled Mane
"On naturally curly hair, this is an easy style to create," says celebrity stylist David Babaii, who gave Sarah Jessica Parker her soft, wavy red-carpet 'do. "If you have short hair, use a smaller-barrel curling iron to get the same effect."
Step one:"The first step is to rough-dry hair, using your fingers instead of a brush while blow-drying," instructs Babaii. If you have pin-straight locks, spritz Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray () onto hair beforehand, which gives it a windblown texture. "This product is a godsend for women who don't have any natural wave," he explains.
Step two:Part hair in the center. "Next, divide it into three sections, two in front and one in back," says Babaii. "Start from the back and move up the head, curling locks of hair in random order, alternating between using a one-inch and a one-and-a-half-inch FHI Heat Ceramic Tourmaline Curling Iron [5 each], holding them in different directions to get a deconstructed, natural look," he says.
Step three:"Curl only the hair that falls below your lash line when you're looking in the mirror," says Babaii, "and count to five before sliding the iron out rather than unrolling it."
Step four:"After curling all the sections, flip your hair over and shake it out to get loose waves," he says. Finish with a flexible hair spray, like Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray (.99).
