How Is Diverticulitis Treated? Traditional, Alternative, and Surgical Options to Consider

How to Treat Uncomplicated Diverticulitis

A sudden attack can be frightening, and if you’ve never felt pain like this in your abdominal area, you may imagine the worst. But if a CT scan or a barium enema X-ray diagnoses diverticulitis with no other problems, you should be able to complete your recovery at home. (5)

Treatments for uncomplicated diverticulitis include:

1. Oral Antibiotics

Because diverticulitis is inflammation or infection of a diverticulum, it probably comes as no surprise that your doctor will prescribe drugs. Oral antibiotics are often the first line of therapy once you’re diagnosed, and your doctor may prescribe one of the following for 7 to 10 days: (6,7,8)

But while antibiotics can stop or slow the growth of bacteria and help clear infections, they’re not always necessary for mild attacks. (9) In fact, Dr. Bulsiewicz says patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis might even consider forgoing antibiotics.

“There are several studies that suggest that skipping antibiotics doesn’t affect complications and recurrence rates for mild, uncomplicated diverticulitis,” he explains.

One study corroborates his statement and concluded that use of antibiotics “neither accelerates recovery nor prevents complications.” (9)

2. Pain Medication

As with any condition causing inflammation and an infection, pain doesn’t disappear overnight — if only it were that simple.

It can take a few days for uncomplicated diverticulitis pain to improve. (10) But this doesn’t mean that you have to live in agony. Taking Tylenol (acetaminophen) as directed can take the edge off your pain and help you feel better. (5)

Other pain relievers might be your preferred drugs of choice. But when it comes to diverticulitis, acetaminophen is your best bet. This is because Advil (ibuprofen) and aspirin can cause abdominal pain and make an already upset stomach feel worse.  (10)

3. Liquid Diet

“In the setting of acute diverticulitis, patients are typically placed on bowel rest and a clear liquid diet,” says Daniel Motola, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist with Gotham Medical Associates in New York City. “This is typically advanced as their symptoms improve over the course of two to three days.”

Right now, your colon needs rest — and the less irritation it endures, the better. Your doctor will likely advise a liquid diet for a few days so your digestive tract can begin healing, and then you can gradually reintroduce low-fiber solid foods back into your diet, such as eggs, fish, green beans, carrots, white rice, refined white bread, and poultry. (5)

Foods and drinks to consume might include: (11)

  • clear broths
  • clear sodas
  • clear soups
  • coffee without milk or cream
  • plain gelatin
  • sports drinks
  • tea without milk
  • juice and water

The upside to a liquid diet is that you might temporarily drop a few pounds. The downside is that you may have low energy because you’re not consuming as many calories as in a normal diet. (12)

4. Alternative Therapies

Maybe you don’t want to pump your body with medication. Some natural and alternative therapies may improve symptoms, but as Bulsiewicz notes, there isn’t a lot of science-backed information available on the effectiveness of alternative medicine for the treatment of diverticulitis.

“Some examples that have been purported include slippery elm, cat’s claw, marshmallow, and licorice root,” he says. “Acupuncture has been used to aid in pain control, but the concern with opting for these supplements is that there is inherent risk with each and an inadequate amount of data to demonstrate efficacy at this point.”

That’s not to say you can’t go the natural or alternative route — just make sure you do so under the guidance of your gastroenterologist.
