Q. Since my husband lost his job he just mopes around the house. Every time I try to talk to him about it, he shuts me down. What can I do?

The Psychiatrist Says:"Encourage him to see his primary care doctor. Many people feel more comfortable reaching out to their doctor instead of a mental health expert as an initial step. Say, 'I'm worried about you, the kids notice you're different, and we need you to ask the doctor for advice.' If the doctor determines that your husband is suffering from clinical depression, he may prescribe an antidepressant and/or refer him to a psychiatrist or counselor.

It's fine for your primary care doctor to prescribe an antidepressant, but keep in mind that finding the right drug can take some trial and error, and that a patient should be monitored closely in the beginning. If someone from the doctor's office doesn't call your husband to check in during the first week or two—or if your husband isn't getting better after a few months—then he should certainly see a psychiatrist."Paula J. The Therapist Says:"Your husband probably feels ashamed and that he has let you down. Don't tell him he is selfish, or lazy, or that something is wrong with him. Say that you will try to support him, and ask him what he thinks he needs. Don't expect an answer right away: He may need days or even weeks to consider it. If he's still not interested in getting help and you think it's necessary, ask another family member or a close friend to reach out to him.

If your husband does decide to see a therapist, he should expect to be evaluated and have a discussion of what kinds of therapy might be helpful. Talk therapy may help him deal with his job loss and understand how it is affecting him and his family, and the therapist may even be able to connect him with some career resources. Exercise helps treat depression, and getting active may also reignite his 'fire'; when he remembers what happy feels like, he may realize how down he's been and take action.
