Advice for Beginner Witches

How to Study Witchcraft

Steps

  1. Think of the reasons why you want to learn more about Witchcraft.Use a journal and write down a few reasons. The art of witchcraft can be used as a tool to manipulate others, although most cases are frowned upon by many modern Witches.
  2. Make sure you understand the differences between Witchcraft, Wicca, and Paganism. They are NOT the same thing. Witchcraft is the magic, while paganism and wicca are religions. Wicca uses magic and Paganism sometimes uses magic, but isn't mainly magic.
  3. Visit a library, or take a look on Amazon for books by authors such as Janet and Stuart Farrar, Phyllis Curott, Scott Cunningham and Patricia Telesco. These are excellent introductory books. It's suggested that you look at some books by Basil E. Crouch. Look for "The Darkside Of The Moon A Complete Course In Magic And Witchcraft ." It's a great start to learning more about the art of Wiccans, Pagans, and witches. Read the bibliographies of these first books to find ideas for further reading.
  4. Do not be afraid to try out what you learn.Always have counter spells ready when it goes bad and make sure to have banishing spells and purification spells. The best way is to learn how to meditate and learn through your own experience.
  5. Have reasonable expectations and be prepared to have your preconceptions challenged.Spells won't usually just happen instantly. The effects may not be exactly what you wanted.
  6. Spend some time every day reading, practising or meditating.Talk to other witches, and start up a book of shadows, a kind of book that contains any witchcraft related things, such as correspondence charts and spells. Make up sigils if you have little energy for spells or rituals.
  7. Seek out online communities that can help you in your study.Tumblr has a large community and is friendly to new witchlings.
  8. Remember to have fun and do only what feels right to you.

  • Question
Why do the things I say with extreme emotion come true?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
A spell or ritual is simply putting your intention out there. In cases where you are having extreme emotions, you may not feel that way later, but for a moment you do. For example, if you were angry and shouted at someone, whatever you said would be an intention. The stronger the intention, the more likely your words will ring true. So if you are angry, you may accidentally put a curse on someone. I try to watch my words, especially when I'm feeling emotional.
    Thanks!

  • Question
How do I know if I am a good witch or a bad witch?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
The magick that you use will come to you naturally through your own body, most witches don't fall into good and bad but into some gray area. You should also remeber that the universe operates by the rule of duality so having a healthy mix of light and dark workings will be beneficial for both you and the order of the universe

  • Question
How can I make my cheating spouse come back to me and be kind?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
There is a spell you can try. You will need a pink candle, a mason jar, primroses, rosemary, basil, and a fire salt mix (salt mixed with black pepper, cinnamon, and chili pepper powder). Place the candle on a table and put the mason jar in front of it. First put in the fire salt, then place in the basil, then layer in the rosemary, and finally put the primroses in. Light the candle, and as it melts say: "My love please come back to me, without him/her we can be a happy couple for eternity. Treat me well and on him/her I won't dwell. Our romance will swell." Afterwards, visualize you and your spouse as a stronger and better couple than before until the candle melts. Use the wax to seal the jar and place it next to your bed.
    Thanks!
  • Question
How do I make a pet unicorn? Can kids do witchcraft?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Unicorns are not simple pets. They are ancient beings and should be honored as such. Most witches believe unicorns can only embody an energy form (they can only be spirits). As for kids doing witchcraft, I sure did. Witchcraft is simply a practice of putting your intentions out there with lots of symbolism.
    Thanks!
  • Question

Joining a coven, as well as celebrating the wheel of the year and celebrating the full moon. Simply casting a spell is witch-like.
    Thanks!

  • Ask other Witches for their opinions, but don't be surprised if their opinion differs from yours.
  • Trust your instincts. If you find yourself disagreeing with an author, trust that and leave the idea alone.
  • Don't be afraid to make your own spell if you can't find one you're comfortable with.
  • Make a scapegoat, a little magical thing that reflects back any curses or hexes that may have been put on you.

Warnings

  • Do not accept training from anyone who feels 'off' to you. Likewise, be aware of the fact that certain traditions within the Pagan community have a practice known as going skyclad. This refers to the act of being naked during ritual, to symbolize the oneness of nature and the honor being shown to the Gods. If this is something you are uncomfortable with, be sure to ask about it up front when deciding to join a study group or a coven. Better to find out beforehand rather than embarrass yourself or be rude to the coven members when you show up for a ritual unprepared.
  • Stay safe and research any ingredients you use! Some may have side effects that aren't commonly known.
  • Do NOT join any covens that seem strange.
  • If you can't practice around others, then you can always do techno-witchcraft! It is a technology based witchcraft, and is usually very hidden. Things like jars or spells can be related via a memory card and folders along with pictures of the ingredients and txt documents instead of speaking the intent or chanting.
