BEST SUMMER COLOGNES 2018 | TOP CITRUS FRAGRANCES
Summer Perfume Tips
Summer brings challenges for perfume lovers. Here's how to choose and wear perfume in the hot summer months.
Consider Skipping Perfumes Altogether
Perfume contains the highest percentage of fragrance, which can be cloying in the summertime when the heat makes your perfume even stronger (as it evaporates it can be powerful). Instead, choose a lighter fragrance, like a cologne or eau de toilette, or even just a lovely scented body moisturizer and soap.
Many of the most popular scents come in lotions and oils. Here are some of our favorites:
- Philosophy's Field of Flowers body lotions, which come in several versions. Just pick your favorite floral scent.
- Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Shimmering Body Oil allows you to shimmer and smell amazing.
- Bath & Body Works And Sweet Pea Body Lotion. Beloved by users.
- Bath & Body Works Coconut Lime Breeze will leave you smelling as if you just walked off a Hawaiian beach.
And if you can't give up perfume, consider using it only at night, leaving the daytime to something much lighter.
Know Your Notes
Just as you wouldn't wear a pullover to a summer picnic, there are certain perfume notes that are best left to the colder seasons. In the heat of summer, fresh and natural—or at least nature-inspired—scent ingredients are the most welcome. These include citrus, fruity, oceanic, woody, and light floral notes such as peony, jasmine, magnolia, freesia.
Fragrance notes to avoid in the summer include any that could become headache-inducing when intensified by heat, such as heavy floral blends, cloying orientals, patchouli, vanilla and other sweet, syrupy or sugary aromas.
Look on the bottle or the box for hints of summer. Anything that reminds you of summer (think berries, flowers, citrus, green grass) will work in a scent.
Summer-ize Your Signature Scent
Do you have a signature perfume? Look to see if your favorite brand makes a summer scent. Many perfumers create summer versions of their most popular fragrances. They up the lighter floral notes and tone down the heavier ones.
Some great summer perfumes include:
- Oh, Lola! by Marc Jacobs
- Clinique Happy Summer Spray 3.4 Oz Eau De Toilette Spray (Summer Exclusive)
- Escada Turquoise Summer
- Green Tea Summer Perfume by Elizabeth Arden
- Celine Oriental Summer By Celine For Women
- Victoria's Secret Beach Angel Summer Edition
- Beyonce Pulse Eau De Parfum Spray (Summer Edition) for Women
Apply More Often
Summer's hot temperatures can make wearing fragrance a fleeting experience. High body heat will cause the alcohol in perfumes to evaporate more quickly, leading to rapidly fading scent. Even if you choose a water-based formula, such as an eau fraiche (which has less actual fragrance in it than perfume), over an alcohol-based perfume, you may find the need to reapply your perfume throughout the day in summer. Just be careful not to overdo it. Your perfume shouldn't enter a room before you do. If in doubt, ask a trusted friend if you need to take it down a notch.
We recommend getting samples of your favorite fragrance to carry in your purse to make reapplication easier.
Layer Fragrance to Make it Last Longer
To help make your fragrance last longer, you can also try layering products, such as soap and body lotion, from your chosen perfume line. Be mindful of your other grooming products, too. Use an unscented soap in the shower and skip strongly-scented moisturizing products so your fragrance doesn't have to compete with your various lotions and potions.
