With an excess of iodine, the following symptoms may occur:

  • goiter formation;
  • salivation;
  • lesions of the mucous membrane of the eye (blepharitis, conjunctivitis), accompanied by burning, redness, increased tearing;
  • lesion of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, manifested in the form of cough, runny nose, persistent sore throat;
  • skin manifestations: pustules, acne, urticaria, dermatitis, dryness and peeling;
  • headaches, dizziness;
  • unusual taste in the mouth;
  • diarrhea;
  • weight loss;
  • reduced visual acuity;
  • frequent colds;
  • excessive sweating;
  • muscle weakness;
  • heart rhythm disturbances (eg, tachycardia);
  • increased nervous irritability, insomnia.

How to get iodine from food?

To prevent a deficit, you need to eat foods that contain iodine. Usually with a normal lifestyle and living in favorable conditions, this is enough.

  • For the prevention of iodine deficiency, children are prescribed from 50 to 100 micrograms daily. Adolescents should take 150 mcg per day, and adults about 200 mcg.
