Military field novel: the best books about love in war
What to read in the second May weekend? We decided to recall the books telling about the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, about people whose heart, both in the trenches, and under the bullets, rejoiced, suffered and loved, as in times of peace.

Modern pastoral, as the author has defined the genre of his story, is a beautiful story of first love, a flower, which was not destined to be dismissed because of the dead breath of war. Platoon of 20-year-old Lieutenant Boris Kostyaev during the offensive against the fascists in Ukraine stops at one of the farms. Lucy, the girl with whom Boris lives falls in love with him, he reciprocates. But duty separates them: the advance of the Soviet army continues, the platoon moves on. In battle, Kostyaev gets a slight wound to the shoulder and ... dies. He does not want to fight for life because of feelings of guilt, shame for humanity, allowing war. Lucy is a stronger spirit. She manages to find the grave of her beloved and say goodbye to him.

The co-workers of Ivan Varavva and Alexei Trofimov are bound by strong male friendship and officer fraternity. Defending the interests of the motherland in various military conflicts of the first half of the twentieth century, they will often fall into difficult situations, when all the hope is only for a friend who will cover your back. The forbidden, undivided, hidden love of Varavva for the wife of Trofimov, Luba, gives a dramatic note to their relationship.
The book formed the basis for the famous film of the same name with Vasily Lanov (Barabbas) and Georgy Yumatov (Trofimov) in the lead roles.
