Marco Marco Collection 2 - FULL Runway Show
Project Runway: "Make It Work" For You—Full Skirts
On last night's episode ofProject Runway, the designers had to create a look for a male client's wife or girlfriend and, thankfully, each woman got to weigh in on her look before strutting for the judges. (The guest judge happened to be actress Malin Akerman, who graced our cover in March 2009.)
The most flattering looks had full or pleated skirts. Joshua made a black cocktail dress with lace accents, a deep V back, and an A-line skirt while Viktor sent a sheer blue blouse paired with a silver and yellow pleated skirt down the runway (below).
Full skirts are fun and feminine, but they can make your bottom half look bigger—and you didn't sign up for that. WH fashion department to the rescue!
"Make it Work" for You
"Aim for a fuller version of an A-line skirt [instead of pleats] unless you're very slim, in which case you can go for a bit more volume," says WH Fashion Market Editor Liza Collis. "Otherwise, you don’t want anything too exaggerated."
"Wear the skirt at the smallest part of your waist and always tuck in your top," Collis says. "If the skirt doesn’t have a substantial waistband, add a medium-width belt (2 to 3 inches wide) right at the waist."
On length: "For most women, I would suggest a full skirt that hits three inches above the knee. If you have great legs, a full mini skirt is fine."
On shoes: "The longer your look, the better. Avoid flats and opt for wedges or heels instead." And stay away from ankle straps, which visually shorten your legs.
On your upper half: "Your top should be simple and not fussy, you have enough going on below. If you're a pear shape and you feel that a full skirt draws attention to your lower half, wear a fitted blazer with a little volume at the shoulders which will help you look more proportional."
WH Senior Fashion Editor Thea Palad adds: "I’m loving the mini/knife/accordion pleat skirt. I think it’s a chic and grown-up take on the standard pleated skirt."
